Hanseok Ko holds a position of full Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Korea University, Seoul. Dr. Ko received his B.S. degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 1982, M.S. degree from the Johns Hopkins University in 1986 and Ph.D. degree from the Catholic University of America in 1992, all in electrical engineering. Dr. Ko joined the faculty of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (School of Electrical Engineering), Korea University, in 1995. He was a Visiting Professor in the ECE Dept, Johns Hopkins University in 2001 and the CS Dept, University of Maryland in 2009. During his tenure as faculty at Korea University, Dr. Ko has been credited as the main developer of core speech interface for Hyundai/Kia Motors. He served as Chair of ECE Dept in 2002~2004 and VP for Information Technology Office of Korea University in 2004~2006. Dr. Ko has been serving as the Director of Intelligent Signal Processing Lab, sponsored by industries and national grants, to engage research on acoustic and spoken language processing, video analytics, and multimodal technologies for robotics and interface applications.

Dr. Ko has authored / coauthored nearly 700 papers (221 refereed journal articles, 458 refereed conference articles) in signal processing and 83 patents are either issued or pending in the US and Korea.

By 2020, he supervised and produced 35 Ph.D’s and 86 M.S degree graduates as a member of faculty at Korea University.

Dr. Ko served as an Editor for JCN and Sensors journals, was a founding member of the Journal of Communications and Networks (JCN), and served as co-General Chair of IEEE ICASSP 2018, Calgary, Canada and IEEE AVSS 2019, Taipei. He is also serving as General Chair of IEEE ICASSP 2024 and Interspeech 2022, respectively. He served as President of the Acoustical Society of Korea in 2016. He was elected as IET Fellow in 2014.

Dr. Ko’s distinctive technical contributions are: (1) attaining First Rank in the in the 2017 IEEE Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scene and Events (DCASE) Grand Challenge Task 1 (acoustic scene classification), (2) developing adaptive beamforming algorithm of which two US patents (No. 8774952B2 on adaptive beamforming, No. 8577677B2 on beamforming based sound source separation) were granted. These two US patents and Korea patents (10-1424327 on speech enhancement, 10-0764247 on Korean speech recognition, etc) were used as the key technology components enabling voice-command navigation system for in-vehicle solutions deployed to two commercial automobile fleets (Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors: over 50,000 units of Genesis model, 300,000 units of Sonata model, 500,000 units of Avante model, etc) via a KOSDAQ listed company, and (3) organizing in-vehicle related signal processing workshops and conferences addressing the human-machine interface issues, which resulted in three books (Multisensor Fusion and Integration for Intelligent Systems (2008), Multisensor Fusion and Integration in the wake of big data, deep learning, and cyber physical systems (2018), and Vehicle Systems and Driver Modeling: DSP, human-to-vehicle interfaces, driver behavior, and safety (2017)), that have received significant readership (over 50,000 downloads).

Dr. Ko also has been serving as the distinguished Review Board (RB) member of the National Research Foundation (NRF) appointed to provide review and guidance on signal processing research activities in Korea. The NRF is the key government science and engineering research funding support organization of Korea. Along with the fact that Dr. Ko serving as president of the Acoustical Society of Korea in 2016, this appointed position as RB demonstrates that Dr. Ko receives the national recognition as the most influential and key leader in signal processing in Korea.

Dr. Ko’s research interest is in signal processing and it includes multimodal sensor fusion for human-computer interaction that incorporates both video and audio (speech) inputs such that the integration results in an increased performance in detection, recognition, and tracking, thus enabling real-time interactions. The research in multimodal sensor fusion requires investigations on optimization for signal processing in both image and acoustics, as well as advanced machine learning algorithms, which include deep learning. To illustrate an example of the fusion problem, consider a two-hour movie, or a short movie clip as its subset, which is intended to capture and present a meaningful (or significant) story in the video to be recognized and understood by human audience. What if we substitute the human audience with that of an intelligent machine or robot capable of capturing and processing the semantic information in terms of audio and video cues contained in the video? By using both auditory and visual means, the human brain processes the audio (sound, speech) and video (background image scene, moving video objects, and written characters) modalities to extract the spatial and temporal semantic information, that are contextually complementary and robust. Smart machines equipped with audiovisual multi-sensors (e.g. CCTV equipped with cameras and microphones) should be capable of achieving the same task. An appropriate fusion strategy combining the audio and visual information would be key in developing such artificial general intelligent (AGI) systems. Dr. Ko’s research work has been on various sensor fusion techniques to combine the audiovisual information cues for video content analytics. There can be a wide range of fusion strategies at various information levels (e.g., feature, decision, and semantic) to extract meaningful information by providing the attention mechanism in terms of weighting significance of the cue to represent the intended world. In light of the recent advancement of deep-learning, my research effort has been to develop new fusion strategies by addressing the relevant research issues toward solving many applications requiring artificial general intelligence.
